Social Skills Groups

(coming soon…sign up for our newsletter for more info…Ages 2-6)

Is your child socially ready for their age group or their grade level?

Lil Know-It Owls’ social skills groups build confident and outgoing children who are able to interact and socialize with peers and adults, by addressing important phases of the school experience.  Facilitated by an early childhood NYS certified teacher and  licensed behavior analyst with a proven track record of helping children form social skills.  Through social skills activities your child will learn how to have fun while developing conversation techniques.

Lil Know-It Owls’ facilitated play dates will facilitate your child in:

· advocating for themselves

· learning how to ask for help

· turn taking

· following routines

Lil Know-It Owls will help your child to learn to solve their own problems instead of letting their parents or teachers do that for them. The most important goal of Lil Know-It Owls facilitated play groups is to have children get along well with others and become enthusiastic learners.

Facilitated play dates are designed to support your child’s individual differences while encouraging them to build relationships with their peers. These fun and safe play dates facilitate an experience that contains:

· music

· art

· gross and fine motor skills practice

We will target skill development of and provide feedback on:

· cooperation

· problem solving

· reciprocal conversation

· joint attention

· flexibility

We will utilize play to strengthen the following areas:

·  social skills & interactions

·  self-esteem

·  coping skills

·  anxiety

·  frustration tolerance

·  play skills

·  feeling identification/expression of emotions

·  impulsivity

·  oppositional & defiant behavior

·  self-regulation-emotional & behavioral

·  adherence to limits

·  adjustment to transitions

Lil Know-It Owls runs on a four (4) week semester. Groups will have no less than two and no more than six participants. We will also accept formed play date groups. There are different age groups available (ages 2 - 6).

Our goal is to expand maintenance and generalization of skills to other settings.

Yoga

(coming soon...sign up for our newsletter for more info…Ages 3-12)

Does your child hold things so tightly they break, or so loosely it falls to the ground and breaks? Does your child enjoy bumping or crashing into things? Is your child often in a state of mild panic? Does your child appear anxious or resistant to interaction? Does your child unresponsive or race from activity to activity?

Your child may have Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), a condition that makes it difficult for him or her to understand where their “edges” are. Children with SPD are often misdiagnosed with having ADD, ADHD, and learning disabilities. We all have random occurrences with sensory processing difficulties, but with SPD these difficulties occur every day of your child’s life (affects their ability to learn and socialize).

How Lil Know-It Owls Yoga Program Can Help…

We will address your child’s relaxation response; body/spatial awareness; breathing awareness; and self-awareness using yoga practices that lead to self-mastery. Children with cognitive physical and social challenges can relax and work on strength in our yoga sessions. Dr. Scott M. Shannon, MD, author of Please Don’t Label My Child, describes yoga for children with SPD as “structure and a commitment to wellness that they can easily latch onto. It’s an empowering activity that they can engage in for a lifetime.” Learning these activities are just as important as learning how to brush teeth, bathing, and other life skills. In addition, your child will be freed from a tremendous amount of stress and confusion. Dr. Sharon Heller, PhD, author of Too Loud, Too Bright, Too Fast, Too Tight: What to Do If You Are Sensory Defensive in an Overstimulating World, states, “the potential of yogic breath control to revitalize the nervous system is enormous”. After two session Dr. Brooks will sit down with you to discuss any sensory tools she believes will further help your child.
